The notes to the Smithsonian/Folkways CD indicate the Ramblers source was Aunt Molly Jackson, Library of Congress Archive of Folksong No 2573 B2 recorded in 1939 in NYC by Alan Lomax with 2 verses from 'Johnson's Boat', The Lewis Watson Chapel Archives, The West Virginia and History Collection at West Virginian Uni, sung by Sarah Workman in 1940.
