Thread Name: Grammies Miss Mark
Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark
Chris -- have you actually listened to Warren Zevon's last record?
I'm aware that he's always had one foot in the rock'n'roll camp and one foot in the singer-songwriter ditch (much like his old friends and champions Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt).
But if you listen to "Keep Me In Your Heart" you'll realize it's pure folk, like many of his older songs ("Carmelita" comes to mind).
One has to keep in mind that the Grammys, like the Oscars and other awards orgies, are the entertainment industry's self-congratulatory back-slap wank-fest celebrating the past year's releases, and as such are not likely to give awards to Ewan MacColl, Woody Guthrie, or whomever you might think of as deserving a folk award.
We had a thread here just the other day about "labels (read "categories"). My feeling is that these are more of a hindrance than a help, and that each musician deserves to be heard and evaluated on their own merit, regardless of classification.
Who said "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture"?
