It's not really English literature though, is it? It's ancient (pre-England) literature from what is now the Middle East, the Mediterranean region, and parts of Africa, written by people who spoke Aramaic (and Hebrew?), and translated into Greek, and then English.

You're right about it being used in lieu of a science book in some parts of the US though, Wolfgang. So I add teachers at some religious schools to my list.
