1812 Privateer Lynx Visits the Maritime Museum in February (1/26/2004)

Visitors Will Have a Chance to Experience the Thrill of 19th Century Combat at Sea

SAN DIEGO—Lynx, a magnificent representation of an early 19th century privateer, will be visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego on Presidents Day weekend, February 13-16, 2004. Privateers were the first ships to defend the United States when Royal Navy warships blockaded American ports during the War of 1812. She will be joined by the museum's own Californian each afternoon as they recreate 19th century naval combat on San Diego Bay. Cannon battle reenactments take place from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost is $45 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under. Lynx will be open to the public each morning for dockside tours 9:00 a.m. – Noon. Dockside tours are included with admission to the maritime museum.

Lynx is a 122-foot topsail schooner launched on July 28, 2001. She carries over 4500 square feet of sail and her main mast rises 94-feet above her deck. The privateer Lynx is operated by The Defense of Freedom Foundation of Newport Beach, CA and is busy year round with educational programs, sail training, public sails and private events. Advance tickets for cannon battles will be sold on-line only at www.sdmaritime.org. A limited number of tickets may be available on the morning of the event, however purchasing tickets in advance is strongly recommended as cannon battles usually sell out. Children under 6 or under 45 lbs. Are not allowed on board for cannon battles.
