I wouldn't be too sure that having a gun on you at the time of an assault, would guarantee that you would emerge the victor from the scenario that you pose, tar_heel.
Unless you have vast experience in dealing with this sort of thing, I think you would find that the reality of the situation would bring on another set of criteria that you would have to take into account; i.e. getting to your weapon in time, and the risk of being disarmed yourself.
And that can really turn your day around, too!

Having said that, 'liberals' have a survival instinct no different from yourself, and if I thought that mine, or my family's life was in danger, I would have no difficulty reconciling this to myself in the short space of time it took me to splatter the guy's picture on every available nearby wall.
Wouldn't give it a second thought, actually.
