Agreed, Barry.

I see nothing wrong with playing a variety of music to survive in the musical field. Whatever gigs keep us going is fine. In the area of folk music, I think, also that it's important to consider the tradtitonal folk music that is not a part of the coffee house or concert stage as a valuable resource not dictated to by the uncertain winds of the music business. I see myself as a folk song "revivalist", not a traditional source and can see that the traditional singer may not be a salable comodity in the business of entertainment. I attended a music business class at Georgia State University and was asked to bring an example of traditional American folk music to show the students what it was. I selected Almeda Riddle. I was astonished at the hostile reaction it engendered by the young rock music biz types who were working toward a place in the "industry". I couldn't believe how close-minded they were! It underscored, for me, the importance of educating the public as to what traditional folk music is. There may not be many gigs available for this kind of music, today.
