A guy I know uses 'Newtone' strings on his Lowden and they sound very good. They're hand-made in Heanor, Derbyshire, UK and are reputed to be the Dog's Wotnots. They make special sets for non-standard tunings also, which give the same tension as you would normally get with standard tuning.
