__THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS__ was a fine film --1960-- described as a simple, eloquent drama, set in 1920s Oklahoma with Robert Preston as a traveling salesman caught in a passionless marriage. His relationships with his wife (Dorothy Maguire), daughter (Shirley Knight)and "friend" (Angela Lansbury) are played out in a series of beautifully acted scenes. The film was taken from William Inge's Pulitzer Prize winning play. (Leonard Maltin)
