I've read that without the moon, the Earth wouldn't have a magnetic field (caused tides in the Earth's iron core) and, being swept by various solar storms and cosmic radiation would never have developed larger forms of life. I understand losing the magnetic field and the resulting radiation would put quite a damper on civilization even now.

No volcanos either, but that seems less important.
