Personally I don't think it had anything to do with stealing Iraqi oil. It certainly has had the fringe benefit of invalidatig all the French oil contracts, which were written between Elf Aquitaine and the Baath government under Sadddam. Those same contracts for delivery of oil are, I assume, now favoring supply to US oil comapnies. I don't know that for a fact though.
