The Almanack Singers did an LP in the late 40s or maybe early 50s, called Sodbuster Ballads, on which Woodie Guthrie sang this song. The implication, at least, from including it in this collection was that the song was from substantially pre-1928 or whenever. And as Guthrie sang it, it was surely no waltz.
