British style 'chips' are big chunky things - one name used in Aussieland is 'Steak chips'. 'French fries' - as the Yanks promote them, are what we Aussies call 'Shoestring chips'.

Interestingly enough, the smaller chunks of potato have a larger surface area, and absorb more of the cooking oil/fat - thus are probably prone to being more unhealthy.
