Marki, that's just what I was going to say! The content of a song is often just the trigger (although some of them are remarkably accurate). I learnt quite a lot about events in Britain in the years before World War I by following up the references in Bill Caddick's magnificent 'The Writing of Tipperary'. I had to trawl through half the volumes in the Encyclopaedia Britannica but it was worth it. It is as important to me as the songs themselves. (What I find I'm now trying to put on the Web.
