Well I'm resurrecting this old thread because I still can't get the Chat to run. I'm using Netscape Navigator 4.03, have java and javaScript enabled, and have successfully run one other Java applet. However when I try the chat I get (eventually) a screen with a gray rectangle in it, a status line that says "java applet initialized", and if I go to the Java Console window, I see a "null pointer exception" message. And sometimes more than one. But no place to type, no messages from others, no nothing. Any ideas?
