Subject: RE: BS: Baseball to Washington, D.C.?????
As a baseball fan, I would love to see at team in DC. As a realist, with a minimal sense of business, I think MLB would be foolish to put a team in the area.

Baltimore has a legitmate concern in my opinion. If I bought a McDonalds franchise and then discovered that McDonalds sold another franchise across the street, I would be worried. I would also question the thought of the corporation for granting such a franchise.

Baseball is the same. 40 miles is not that far, especially when the fan base is mobile.   I also wonder what kind of fan base can be built.   Sure, there are many people who remember the Senators fondly, but if they supported the team in the first place they never would have left. Same with the Brooklyn Dodgers. If everyone who claimed they were a Dodger fan went to the games, the attendance would have been through the roof. (There were other factors in play with the Dodgers, including O'Malley's wish to build a new stadium that received little support from the local government.)

Bottom line is, wherever the Expos move will have a tough long term future.   I think baseball is oversaturated and there may be too many teams and too little talent these days.

A team in Podunk??? No offense, but can you really imagine a road trip to Podunk?
