Let no one persuade you it's easy to hide
These tears in the Mersey, the blood on the tide
For it's here I was born and here I will bide

All ships and traders came in from the sea
Clippers with cargoes of cotton and tea
Sugar and slaves for the lands of the free

All the merchants and bankers recoup share
For the city that made you you know how to care
When you counted you profits invested elsewhere

Warehouses crumbled and shipyards decayed
There's rust in the river and dust on the quay
No wonder your people and councillors say

The spirit is fading, poverty waits                     
For it's churches and charities stand at the gate
You can mortgage your future and increase your rates

Raised upon charity held down by poverty
Sold down the river again
Built upon slavery, brought down by knavery

I tell you this morning some people came down..?
With Keegan, Shankly , they once drew a crowd
But if eleven could see you, for crying out loud

Me dad's on the brew since they gave him the sack
Me hard sense of humour's beginning to crack
Our kids on his bike again out on the smack

And we've launched all your liners and fought in your wars

Peace and democracy bring down hypocrisy

Martyrs and heretics, masons and politics

Government ministers sitting by dawn            
They don't heed the warning or answer the call
They're safe in the suburbs, understand bugger all

In somewhere and Houndsworth the story's the same
Or Brixton or Belfast you cannot disclaim
If they can't find the answer the police take the blame
