Although it is not strictly contemporary to the era, I would recommend hearing Les Sullivan's song "Sullivan's Farewell" the words for which are taken from a letter written by a soldier to his wife on the eve of battle and links back of course to the Irish connection. A very beautiful and moving song which is on his (plug) CD.
