Thread Name: Lyr Req: Bare-Legged Kate (John Dengate)
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bare legged Kate - John Dengate
Just for the record, the song was also published in "The Song Goes On", edited by Lynne Tracey in 1986.

A note to the song, attributed to John Dengate, reads:

"Kate is my mother, born Kathleen Mary Kelly, in Gundagai, NSW in 1914. Life was bitterly hard for poor, rural Irish-Australians. The song is a tribute to Kate's dignity and courage in the face of heartbreak and poverty. Cyanide was used in the extraction process on the Gundagai goldfield and many miners were poisoned. The tune is based on the Irish, Bare-Legged Joe".

- and the last line of the last verse is "Through the haunted hills of Gundagai".
