Sonnet 16/11/02                              DCCLXVI

Should I seek for your hopes, to know desire,
And offer reasons you might your smile send?
Has heart a chance to dream, or do you tire
Of words that can but talk of comfort lend?
And shall I try to reach out, with a rose,
To brush away your sadness? Can my dream
Be soft enough to capture tears? Hope grows
With winter night, but heart must past redeem.
What gift would bring you cheer, that I might touch
Some part of muse? Would book or candle light
A gleam in eye? Are hopes to give you such
Illusion, that my visions have no sight?
I cannot know of sadness, and ignore:
My heart demands I try to smile restore.
