One technique for taming animals is to hold them so that they cannot harm you and cannot escape. Then pet them gently until they calm down.

I have tamed a ferocious iguana like this in about an hour. A cat I had took a couple of weeks of daily sessions, but she eventually responded and got to like and even demand petting.

I saw a TV show once where this technique was applied to wild horses. To hold them immobile they put them in a horse box and filled it with grain so that only their head was exposed. They claimed that the horses usually became manageable after one session.
