The explosion which produced the backdrop to Jez's "The Last of the Widows" happened in Easington, County Durham in 1952.

Following the end of the 1939-1945 War and the formation of the National Coal Board everyone hoped that such explosions were a thing of the past. The deaths therefore produced even greater shock and anger than in earlier times in addition to individuals' loss which Jez so poignantly chronicles.
