peedeecee: the writers of Superman comics invented the idea of Kryptonite for the very reason you've pointed out. His heroism was empty since he couldn't be hurt. Once they introduced Kryptonite, Superman had many opportunities to prove his heroism by saving people despite the fact that doing so exposed him to kryptonite and endangered his life.
