When my uncle was a young medical resident and his daughter was still a baby back in the early '60s, she had a horrible cold and was, of course, too young for any of the usual remedies. He asked an older doctor for advice. He suggested equal parts of honey, lemon and brandy, warm. Worked for my cousin and it still works wonders on me, especially for throat afflictions. Of course, after sipping it awhile you don't CARE if you still have the cold!
