I hate to throw a wet blanket on the "family" issue, but for all that pets are part of the family, you're foolish if you start trying to find cats in a burning house. They're notorious for hiding at times when things are noisy and chaotic, and you'd be more likely to lose your own life trying to find them under beds or sofas or hiding under the clothes in the back closet. I love my cats too, but I won't let them endanger the human inhabitants of the house under such circumstances.
