Far more than you ever wanted to know about the word "barrel."

Could it be that the expression has nothing at all to do with guns, but refers to "shooting" fish into a barrel? That is, perhaps sliding them quickly down a chute and into a barrel where the fish were salted or packed? I don't know, but this usage would go along with "shooting pool" or "shooting golf" and it would be a simple task to do.
