It's an old story, but if you haven't heard it............
On "You Bet Your Life" Groucho was provided with easy marks as contestants so that he could ad lib for laughs. He never had a script, but he knew some background so he would be ready. One of his best one liners never made it to the air although the laugh they recorded from the audience was used as laugh track for many years.
A couple named Story were the contestants and they had 26 children. The show was the first to film with 3 cameras and so could take as long as they wanted to let Groucho get the best out of each situation. Not much had happened with the Storys until Groucho asked Mrs. Story why they had so many children. She replied, "Groucho, I just love my husband." Without missing a beat, Groucho quipped, "I like my cigar too but I take it out once in awhile."
