The War cast its shadow over most of the decade. The atmosphere of limitless possibility created by the Civil Rights Movement, and visionaries like King and Kennedy, was poisoned by assassination. The personal liberation that came with the sexual revolution, the music, and the psychedelic experience, was tempered by the knowledge that you could be drafted, uniformed, and killed at the will of the government. Life had a sweeter, sharper edge.
And it didn't hurt that I was nineteen.
