My friends from the 60s....

Bob's dead. Stomach cancer, caused by the cigarettes he couldn't stop smoking after his tour at Qui Non.

Tommy's dead. Overdose. He laid for a couple of days in a closed room in an Indianapolis summer before they found him.

Steve's dead -- died about a year ago. He'd had throat cancer; cigarettes again. I wrote a letter to the local draft board, asking (as a veteran) that they classify him as a CO.

Sue's living in the Bay area with her second husband (a great guy). One of her daughters has retinitis pigmentosa; the other works in Anchorage.

Peggy's out of the marriage she put up with for 24 years and 3 daughters. She walked -- with the girls -- out one night when he became abusive again and she had had enough. Took her maiden name back and is now working on an annulment.

Leo's dead, of cancer. He went up to Alberta with the US Army (and the Black Watch) to test protective suits against dilute mustard gas.

Rowdy died when a tractor he was driving tipped over on him.

Linda's living near Akron, Ohio.

Dunno what happened to the rest of 'em. But one of them became my best friend, and I married her, and we're still that way.
