My mother has had since the 1960's an LP of Nina Simone In Concert, which has this memorable song with her intro:"The name of this song is 'Mississippi Goddamn!' And I mean every word of it." she sang from the heart: angry songs, sensual songs....

I've always enjoyed listening to Hoagy Carmichael's rendition of Barnacle Bill The Sailor, with Bix Beiderbecke heard singing in the chorus (it somehow went over the heads of the censors) "Barnacle Bill the shithead."
