The latest he could have been in 'Nam was 30 years ago, in 1975 (Jaysus! has it been that long?)
49 - 30 = 19. So yeah, it's possible. Big Mick could have enlisted at 18 (as I did) or even (with consent) at 17. In fact, the strong recommendation of a local judge or the searchings of an irate father could have led him to enlist at 16, but I won't speculate in this area.
