I ask not for a promise, but your smile
To lend some pleasure to a dreary night.
Can I ask that you write of dreams, to light
This lonely dark, if only for a while?
I ask not for your soul, but that you share
Some time to tell how you have been. I seek
To learn what part of passions I might speak,
And not risk loss of one for whom I care.
I ask not for your kiss, though I desire
That, and far more. What you give is for you
To choose and offer. With but hopes in view,
I cannot keep from dreaming of eyes' fire.
I ask not that you change, but that you be
My light; My muse, that I in dreams might see.
