Yes. I once found a picture of an ancient english sax/seax/seaxe that fit almost exactly over a 19th century English Bowie when superimposed. The 'Beagnoth' sax, I think. Most Bowies had a bit more curve to the edge than a sax, thus giving a higher point, and the clip -- the part on the back of the blade that slopes down to the primary edge -- is sharpened.

There's a good chance that James Bowie's own knife didn't look much like a Bowie knife, but that's another story.
