The losing money part is a portion of the motivation for such suits: Make the target, the alleged infringing user, pay out a lot of money in court costs, because the big organizations can afford it better. It's intimidation mainly, with a certain amount of revenge in it, I think. Even if the charging organization loses the lawsuit, they win in the long run by arm-twisting and scare tactics.
