Cello was used quite commonly in England and Scotland in "vernacular" as well as "art" music, particularly for dancing. In England, at amy rate, well within living memory. Niel Gow's collections include cello parts, for instance (his brother was a cellist), though they aren't very interesting to play. Today's cellists probably want something a bit more challenging, like the melody part!
