Pauline, just a small (?) point: 'Peat Bog Soldiers' wasn't written by Jewish prisoners but by communists, socialists and other 'undesirable' elements who were the first to be imprisoned (and often murdered, like Carl von Ossietzky and Erich Muehsam) in concentration camps.
