I just used the alcohol on cloth with the hair still attached. It worked great, and I didn't notice I destroyed anything.

The shampoo after the alcohol doesn't really serve any purpose as far as I can tell. Alcohol dissolves everything (and more) that shampoo does, keeps the bow from getting wet so there's no drying time, and leaves no residue. Do NOT get the alcohol on anything but the hair, though. You'll also (as previously mentioned) have to rosin the heck out of the bow later.
