Aytoun's is good sentimental poetry, but I much prefer the ballad of "The Border Widow's Lament", much closer to traditional style. It seems to be no later than 1715. It's in the Scarce Songs 1 file on my website with ABCs of Scots and Irish tunes for it, also.Click For comparison, Laurence Price's earlier ballad "The Famous Flower of Serving Men" is in the Laurence Price file.
