I'd always though he'd gotten an honorary doctorate degree in journalism or maybe English from a prestigious university. He certainly deserved one. He was sort of like a modern day Mark Twain, and Twain's honorary doctorate from Oxford in 1907 gave him, to paraphrase, the authenticity he'd always craved. A quick google turned up a bit of info saying Thompson had received a doctorate from a mail-order church.
