I use EditPlus as a general purpose text editor. It's cheap, and having lost the registration key several times due to HD problems etc, they have emailed me with the details promptly once I identify myself. It also is extremely advanced - multiple windows, etc plus the ability to edit any computing language - you can have language specific references which are loaded in so that it will highlight for example HTML code, and you can see instantly where the errors are. Also you can insert code proforma chunks and fill in the bits eg a link to a URL.
