It can't be just WinTel, because I've never had any of the problems described either. There are some problems with legacy hardware and software, with newer Win versions; but not everything is compabible with any OS. The most common problem with new installations is a set-up with a "0" value in the RTFM key in the Registry. It can be very difficult to accomplish a reset.
