It is a guitar fingerstyle technique based upon alternation of thumb strokes (usually limited to the lower three strings of the guitar and rhythmically moving from string to string) and finger strokes, (usually limited to the upper three strings of the guitar) the latter being combined on alternate beats with thumb strokes.
