Subject: RE: BS: Baseball, Steroids & Congress
Whenever the Government gets itself involved with an issue like this, red flags should go up. Mostly likely, this will be a photo-op for members of the Committee. It will be interesting to see how many of these people try to make a name for themselves, or whether any of this smacks of McCarthyism.   However, having said that, MLB has no one to blame but themselves for the situation they now find themselves in. There's no doubt in my mind that many GM's, including Commish Budlite, knew what was going down with the number of their players indulging in steroids. But the bottomline in sports is to win. Ergo, they swept all this under the rug for years. It's ironic that the 2 home run guys who saved baseball after the strike, namely Sosa and McGuire, could be implicated. They'll be more names come out of the closet in the weeks to come as the investigation continues, so it should be interesting to see just how messy this gets. Furthermore, the steroid issue will most likely be under examination in other major league sports. Knowing the possible harmful effects effects of steroids on their bodies, the players have really no one to blame but themselves, but it's the lure of big money. Steroids can't make a player hit a curver, slider or heater any better, but when they connect, 370 outs become 400 foot dingers. My question is whether Gary Bettman or Bob Goodenow are on the juice?
