Self-deprecating humor works very well for promotion, and Sttaw Legend has done it legendarily. Humor and humility and discussion and intelligence are all valuable elements in promoting folk performances and recordings, and all are well-accepted here.

Outright marketing doesn't work here, and I think it generally doesn't work well for folk audiences.

I suppose it's different for singer-songwriter performers who work for a fan base, whose following is based more on personality rather than music - but I don't think most Mudcatters are oriented toward market-based music.

We generally don't look upon music as a commodity to be marketed, and we certainly don't look favorably on people who come to us only to market to us.
