Hi Mick, Carthiginnian is a restored brig tied up on the Island of Maui. I lent a helping hand while there in the restoration in the late 70's. It was at this time I met an old Cape Horner George who same the song. George just switched the name from what ever it had been to the ship that was underfoot, he also did this to another song I got from him, the "Albertina" which he sang as the Carthiginnian. I later found a versioncollected by Hugill but never came close to find one that was what George sang. He would've have been a cabin boy around WW1, so he my have picked up "When My Spell Is Over" (my title, he never mentioned one) sometime later after he left the Baltic trade & went into the Cape Horn trade. I'm gonna go over what I have from George, after seeing the above song (Peter's Private Army) I think some of the words I have may make more sense (it holds very true to the same spirit) & maybe I can put more of it together.
