Legendary tales at Worcestershire's most historic inn
Timothy Oakes – or "Tim o' the Oak", as he is known – comes from the Forest of Dean in neighbouring Gloucestershire and specialises in stories from the old Celtic tradition of North West Europe. He also recounts legendary tales he has collected himself from the Welsh borders and ancient sagas which come from the lands around the Baltic Sea. His reputation as a champion of traditional storytelling is second to none and I felt his act would be ideal for a place like The Fleece which is so steeped in local history," said the landlord, Nigel Smith. We have been making every effort to provide as normal a service for our customers as possible while the inn itself receives what is its first major renovation for 400 years. Tim's storytelling is just one of the many interesting events we have planned for the coming months. The Fleece has long been a centre for traditional music, song and dance and I am determined that it will continue to be so." The programme of events is being gradually expanded to cater for a wider range of musical tastes including classical, jazz and folk and to embrace other types of artistic and theatrical presentations. The inn's celebrated annual asparagus auction to raise funds for the local Bretforton Silver Band is taking place at the end of May and there will be a grand re-opening ceremony for the inn on 18-19 June when the renovations will have been completed.
