Frank Hinchliffe's fine Yorkshire accent seems to have misled the transcriber of The Pear Tree. The line he sings in verses 2 and 4 isn't -
"One of the pears that pleas-ed me"
but
"Wonnot the pears that pleas-ed me"
i.e. It was not the pears that pleas-ed me
It makes sense that way too.
