Bobett, have a little talk with your friend and his wife. Suggest that before you, um, they make the actual move that they set aside a couple of days to explore the town- let's just call it Luray, for convenience - and see what the town is about. Stay in a nice hotel and try several different eating places, rummage around garage sales and crafts shops or whatever else his wife likes to do, meet people at church, visit the local Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors' Bureau and the museums and libraries- in other words, talk with people who love the town. (I happen to know that Luray is a lovely town- see if you can get them to settle near there.)

Or have her post her complaints and fears and reservations on the Mudcat- that'll shake her right up.
