I am SO glad that I was born long enough ago (only 1951!) that I can remember travelling on steam trains, on the suburban track opposite my home (West Aussie) - and there's nothing quite like that smell either (what chemical combination caused that?) of being on a bridge when the engine puffed under!!! OK, so everything in the carriages was covered in a dusty grit - including yer clothes and face - but only ya Mother cared about that!!!
