My reason for making my original point is that I think a lot of people who are not of African or American Indian ancestry in the US tend to discount the experiences of the ones who are when defining things like "the average experience" back in "the good old days". "The average experience" does include the experiences of the slaves and their descendents, as well as the indigenous peoples... not just the people of European ancestry.
