I don't know about it being fake to hand on music that way, La Scaramouche. To hand on music, you use the tools, which are available to you at the time. Isn't it just as fake to pretend that you really did learn a tune from somewhere else, when you actually heard it on a record? As folk music is a minority interest, I believe the best chance now of preserving it is by using any technology available.
